Until we meet again...

E-mail Print PDF

I must say that last Tuesday was indeed a bitter-sweet farewell to Category 5. I have so enjoyed being part of the community and I cannot say enough good things about what Robbie is doing for viewers. Moreover, I have had the opportunity to meet some truly unique and intelligent people within the Category 5 chat room.

Thank you to Robbie for letting me be part of his dream and for the viewers for all the encouragement (and phonetic spelling when I needed some help with the technicaly jargon!)

As most of the viewers know, I had to leave the show to continue with my schooling to finish my BSc. Nursing next year. This summer I'm working on a Surgery unit and the experience so far has been amazing. It's really a privilege to have people trust you to care for them. I have also had the opportunity to spend one shift seeing what emergency nursing is like. Let me tell you that it is nuts. In one room we had a pregnant women, then next a grandmother who had a stroke, in the next bed a woman on a ventilator because she was losing consciousness, and finally we were caring for a man with a potential heart attack. How diverse and intense!

I will try to remember to post any exciting experience I have or anything new to share about. Several viewers have emailed me with ideas to blog about and I sure appreciate that! If you would like to suggest something, please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Until next time, thanks for everything,

Star Trek

I think it's safe for me to talk about the film now that Robbie has ventured to see it!

Last week I went to see the new Star Trek movie and I give it two thumbs up. Although I was never a true Trekkie, I was able to follow the story and enjoy the characters just the same. Abrams did a great job matching the original characters (especially Bones) and the special effects kept me on the edge of my seat. The time travel aspect of the plot did make the story a little convoluted at times, but I think it was necessary to fit all the important characters into a movie that's less than 6 hours long!

Overall, it's a solid summer flick and I recommend it.

Live long and prosper my friends,

Carrie

Hello All!

E-mail Print PDF

Hello everyone!

I just watched Episode 81 and noticed several new additions: the studio set-up, Reuben Langdon, and of course, Robbie's new glasses. All very nice. Having the studio painted will certainly add a lot.

So I must share with all you Category 5ers that I am still running into new technology off the show! I have been learning how to use MediTech at the hospital, a program all health care professionals on the unit can access to document assessments, lab results, and nursing notes. It is an excellent little gem of technology. I wonder how they do their backups. It would be huge!

My clinical rotation is going very well and I look forward to joining Category 5 at the end of May.

Happy Easter!

Carrie

How Things Change

E-mail Print PDF

First of all, congratulations to Robbie for having his video selected to be featured on the new Jaunty Ubuntu CD. Very cool!

I was just reading an excerpt from the magazine Housekeeping Monthly from 1955. It describes how the good wife should behave. The author contends that the wife should:

  • Listen to your husband and let him talk about his day first-remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.
  • Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of stress and pressure.
  • Don't complain if he's late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

oh...and here's my favourite:

  • Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, his is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him. A good wife always knows her place.

My, how things have changed. Husband-wife relationships have certainly changed to be more egalitarian (for the most part). But there are things that remain incredibly consistent throughout the ages, in every culture, and I would suggest that it is our search for meaning and purpose. I was thinking of the changes I have even witnessed in my own life from public school to now - it is remarkable also. Consistently I hear in schools and from others that we can dig down deep and find the source of strength in ourselves because there is no one else to look to. I have found that post-modern approach to anwering life's quesitons to be unfulfilling. But I have found that the answers to the four questions that plague each culture, 'who am I? where did I come from? what's my purpose? and where do I go when I die? are found in Jesus Christ.

I was watching the video of former Korn guitarist Brian Welch, who describes the change in his own life after searching for answers to those very questions. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifN2cTCSNOw

Until next time, keep it real.

Missing Category 5

E-mail Print PDF
I certainly missed the Category 5 community this past Tuesday! I am currently completing mandatory clinical hours for my degree in nursing. There may be some evenings when I will be able to be on the show, however.
I realized how thankful I am to be part of the show and all the discussions that take place. So many viewers from all over the world bring such a wealth of knowledge, comments, and questions - I learn something each week! And I know that Robbie feels the same way about the community. I am also appreciating the communication with viewers via email while I am away (thank you!).
I am also so thankful for Robbie's willingness to explain complicated technical 'things' for me and the other viewers who aren't as computer savvy.
If you have any suggests on what I should blog about, let me know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Oh, and I can't believe that we have UBUNTU mugs! I can't wait to take mine for a test drive!

Talk to you soon!
